Overview of the Congo Ebola Outbreak
The Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) continues to battle sporadic Ebola virus disease outbreaks. As of late 2024, active cases remain limited to North Kivu and Ituri provinces, with the WHO reporting fewer than 20 confirmed cases in the current monitoring period.
Causes and Transmission
Ebola virus originates from fruit bats and other wildlife reservoirs. Human-to-human transmission occurs through direct contact with blood or bodily fluids of infected individuals. High-density populations, weak healthcare infrastructure, and ongoing conflict zones in eastern Congo increase the risk of spread.
Symptoms and Diagnosis
Early symptoms include fever, fatigue, muscle pain, and headache.
